SOLAR COOKERS

Three Types of Solar cooker are popular in India

1. THE BOX TYPE
The box type solar oven is designed for cooking and baking during the daytime. It can be constructed from just about any material (wood, cardboard, metal, baskets and clay) and made to any size, depending on the needs of the user. It consists of a well insulated box with a double-glazed window. The blackened inner box heats up in the sunlight, warming the air trapped in the box. Just as in a greenhouse, the hot air is retained by the glass. Temperatures of 120°-160°C are the possible, enough for cooking and baking. The main drawback in this type is the speed and the fact that the cooker has to be outside the house. It takes 2 to 4 hours for cooking one meal.

2. THE SK 14

Solar energy is not only suitable for cooking and baking, heating water and drying foodstuffs is also possible. Solar water heaters can be built simply and cheaply.

SK-14 is a parabolic reflector with a place to put cooking pot at its focus. Cooking can be done at speeds almost equal to a gas stove. The only drawback is that the cooker has to be outside the house and has to be moved to face the sun every 30-40 minutes. We offer a lightweight easy to assemble cooker in a kit form.

Solar energy is clean, available in abundance and free. It is a renewable energy source available for every-one. In most industrialised areas, energy wastage is rampant. As a result, our climate is being affected at a global level. Energy sources which are safe for society are needed. At the same time, there are large areas in the world where energy shortage is a way of life despite the fact that these areas use 40 to 90 times less energy than rich countries! In many of tyhe poor countries, cooking is the main energy consumption; wood, coal, crop residues and dung being the main sources of household energy. Although they are renewable sources, excessive usage can contribute to soil erosion and deforestation. Solar energy can solve both problems: energy shortage and irresponsible energy usage.
